One of the reasons I love teaching chess for children in South East London is the benefits it gives them in terms of improving their maths, reasoning, logic and science skills but I wouldn’t take my word for it
Here are some of the many people who have written studies proving the benefits of chess for kids – if there is a report available I have linked to it online:
“Chess as a Way to Teach Thinking” Diane Horgan – report available here – Department of Psychology, Memphis State University
This report also highlights the importance of regular support from a chess coach and at home
“The Effect of Chess on Reading Scores” by Stuart Margulies, Ph. D
“Chess in Education Research Summary” by Robert Ferguson (1995). A 14-page summary of key chess research
“Chess Makes Kids Smarter” (Dr. Gerard J. Dullea)
“Chess benefits for kids” by Dr David Poston – report available here – New Mexico Scholastic Organisation, February 2010
“Chess Makes Kids Smart” (Anne Graham-PARENTS-Dec 1985). Urges parents to introduce their kids to chess and quotes work of Pete Shaw, Jeff Chesin, Bob Cotter, etc.
“The benefits of Chess in education” by Patrick S McDonald Youth Coordinator for the Ontario Chess Association. This is a collection of studies and papers on Chess and education – report available here
“Chess and Education” (John Artise). After two years of psychological research in chess, Artise found cognitive improvements in memory, logic, observation and analysis, and operant conditioning
“The Importance of Chess in the Classroom”, Atlantic Chess News, 1990 (Michael D. Wojcio). Wojcio teaches chess to slow learners in five NJ schools and this describes his program and the benefits
There are numerous studies out there that talk about the benefits of a child learning how to play Chess. This is one of the reasons I’m passionately promoting the game of Chess to children in South East London. The skills children learn from playing Chess are useful in real life situations as they develop and grow. If your child is interested in giving chess a try, join one of my chess clubs in SE London. Both girls & boys from 6 years upwards are welcome in all my clubs.

About Richard Weekes
I started the Greenwich Chess Group in 2006 and operated for five years until 2011. I've recently changed the name of my organisation to the Richard Weekes Chess Academy and I still teach children how to play chess in both primary and secondary schools. I also promote chess as an educational tool and a socially cohesive activity and I operate junior chess clubs in the community. Starting off mainly in the Royal Borough of Greenwich I now also teach children and young people in Lewisham, Southwark and Lambeth and I will soon be teaching chess in Brent schools too. Now running five junior chess clubs in South East London, I love teaching beginners and new players. This is turning out to be so much fun that I'm really enjoying myself. As I have a real passion for teaching children chess, I do believe that I've finally found what I want to do for a long time to come.

Richard,
I cannot tell you how much I am so very impressed with what you are doing. That is such an amazing idea. My son learned early from his father and he has passed this knowledge onto his children and now getting to the stage where they beat him
Can you imagine … in the future, children in London competing with each other but this time with chess.
Credit to you.
When I come over in June, I would love to check out one of your events.
